Singapore, 9-10 January 2026

Venue: 2 Bukit Merah Central, Level 3, Auditorium S (159835)

Our Guest of Honour, Distinguished Guests, Esteemed Speakers, and Conference Delegates,

It is my great honour to welcome you to the 2026 Transactional Analysis Conference, where we come together to explore the transformative power of TA in advancing mental health, diversity, and inclusivity.

Our conference theme, “TA Lens on Mental Health: Embracing Diversity and Inclusion,” reflects our commitment to fostering a culture grounded in the principle of “I’m OK, You’re OK.” Over the next two days, we will explore insights and practical applications of TA to support mental health and promote inclusive practice across different settings.

I would like to extend a warm and special welcome to Ms Anisha and Dr Giles, who have travelled from India and the UK respectively, to share their experience and expertise with us. I am also truly grateful to our local presenters for generously sharing their time and knowledge at this conference.

I would also like to sincerely thank the TAA Executive Committee and ECTA for their dedication and hard work over the past years. TAA Singapore has benefitted greatly from your generous and unconditional support. To our members and volunteers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, please accept my heartfelt gratitude. Your support and sacrifices have brought us to where we are today.

Our conference programme features a rich and diverse lineup, including a panel discussion on mental health and inclusion that brings together TA perspectives alongside a non-TA perspective, presented by the President of the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC), Mr Andy Lam. We also have nine seminars spanning foundational to advanced TA concepts, along with a special non-TA seminar by Professor Timothy Sim.

It is my hope that this conference will foster meaningful connections among professionals, practitioners, and learners, and that each of you will leave feeling inspired, enriched, and empowered.

Thank you once again to all our presenters and organisers for your tireless efforts in making this event a success. Wishing all a productive, engaging, and enriching conference.

Dr Jessica Leong
President, TAA (Singapore)

From Rackets to Pacifier

Explores how early emotional survival strategies, known in Transactional Analysis as “rackets,” evolve into adult patterns of adaptation and managing distress—our psychological “pacifiers.” We will trace how these scripted feelings often become unconscious strategies for self-soothing or managing others, especially in the context of power and identity. Participants will learn to recognize the emotional “pacifiers” they use, understand their roots in relational and systemic dynamics, and explore more conscious, liberatory ways of relating to self and others.

LEARNING OUTCOME:

  1. - Recognize and understand racket feelings as early emotional survival strategies that shape adult adaptation patterns and how they evolve to be pacifiers for self-soothing;
    - Explore how emotional pacifiers function in managing distress, identity, and power dynamics in therapeutic and relational contexts; and
    - Apply more conscious, liberatory practices to support clients (and self) in shifting from scripted emotional responses to authentic responses.

SPEAKER: Anisha Pandya

Educational TA and Being at Home in the World

Explore the significance of schooling on how we experience ourselves in the world. Typically, the emphasis on life script has been on the impact of family dynamics on the individual’s belief about self and others. This time we will turn our focus to the influence of the classroom on generating personal narratives that extend beyond childhood into adult life. We will look at how educators draw on TA where the ‘client’ is not a patient, and their task is not cure.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. - Understand how schooling shapes personal narratives beyond childhood;
    - Explore the influence of classroom experiences on life-scripts; and
    - Recognise the application of TA principles by educators in non-clinical settings.

SPEAKER: Dr. Giles Barrow

Exploring Self-Expression and Emotional Growth: A journey of Self-discovery to Self-recovery

Explores the integration of Transactional Analysis (TA) ego states with expressive arts as a means of self-exploration and emotional growth. It delves into how creative activities can be used to access, understand, and balance the Parent, Adult, and Child ego states, fostering deeper self-awareness and healing. By engaging in expressive arts, individuals can reflect on their internal dialogues and develop healthier communication patterns.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Understand the fundamental principles of Transactional Analysis (TA) and its three ego states.
- Recognize the role of expressive arts in facilitating emotional expression and self-awareness.
- Utilize creative methods such as journaling, storytelling, and movement to enhance self-reflection and emotional processing to explore and balance the different ego-states.

SPEAKER: Vandana Khanna

Coaching Through TA Lens

Unlock the power of Transactional Analysis (TA) in your coaching practice. This interactive workshop bridges theory and real-world application, equipping practitioners with practical tools to transform client relationships, deepen insights, and drive lasting behavioural change. Discover how TA concepts and methodologies can elevate your coaching conversations, helping clients achieve greater clarity, motivation, and growth in professional settings. Whether you are new to coaching or looking to expand your skillset, this session offers fresh strategies to bring your TA knowledge to life.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Strengthen coaching relationships through clear and effective contracts and enhanced ego-state awareness;
- Recognise and address psychological games that arise during the coaching process;
- Apply core TA concepts to motivate, empower, and support clients’ growth; and
- Differentiate between therapeutic interventions and coaching applications of TA.

Interparental Conflict & Child Mental Health Issues

We will attempt to unravel the intricate processes of interparental conflict and children's mental health in therapy. It will be based on work done in China and in Singapore. Through detailed analyses of purposefully selected cases where there are children suffering from mental health problems, divorce and/or family violence, this workshop would unpack the way to uncover the intricate dynamics and some therapeutic approaches used to address them. This workshop invites participants to engage in a critical examination of the way certain parent-child relational patterns transcend specific ethnic and cultural boundaries.

LEARNING OUTCOME:

At the end of this three-hour workshop, participants may be able to:

- Critique the theories and concepts of interparental conflicts and child psychopathology
- Appraise the working concept of the “Dance of Three”
- Recommend one therapeutic approach in working with interparental conflict and child mental health issues

SPEAKER: Professor Timothy Sim

System Imago: A New Perspective on Group Behaviour and Mental Health

Explores the concept of system imago—the unconscious schema of power that shapes how groups and systems self-organize—and its impact on mental health. We will examine how collective dynamics, privilege, and exclusion influence who feels safe, seen, or silenced within therapeutic spaces. Through reflection and experiential exercises, participants will learn to recognize and respond to these invisible patterns, supporting more inclusive, healing-centered practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Identify how system imago influences which identities, behaviours, and emotional expressions are centered or marginalized in mental health spaces.
- Explore the impact of system imago on diagnostic practices, therapeutic norms, and relational safety.
- Recognise how personal distress is often shaped by collective templates of power and exclusion.
- Develop a critical lens to notice and interrupt dominant system imagos in clinical, organizational, and community settings.

SPEAKER: Anisha Pandya

A Brief Introduction to Ecological Transactional Analysis (Eco-TA)

Eco-TA is one the most recent developments in the professional community with its strong alignment with the wider issues associated with diversity, equality and inclusion. Much of mainstream human psychological approaches are rooted in an ‘Indoor Mind’ frame of reference. We will look at the resurgence of interest in outdoor practice and the cultivation of the ‘Outdoor’ or ‘Ecological Mind’. Drawing on ideas from the initial work of TA ecological practitioners we will integrate the potential value of outdoor practice for promoting well-being in the world.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Explore Eco-TA’s role in promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion;
- Understand the ‘Indoor’ and ‘Outdoor’ mind concepts in TA and recognise the benefits of outdoor practices for mental well-being; and
- Integrate ecological approaches in TA practice.

SPEAKER: Dr. Giles Barrow

Relationship Analysis in Couple Counselling with TA: Exploring the Space Between

Explores the use of Relationship Analysis in couple counselling (Berne, 1961). We will learn experientially to assess both the qualitative nature (sympathy, antagonism, antipathy, indifference) and the quantitative intensity of transactions between partners. Drawing on Berne’s original relationship analysis and modern relational principles, practical tools will be offered for counsellors to decode emotional games, analyse co-created dynamics, and work within the therapeutic relationship to support meaningful change in couples.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- Analyse couple dynamics using qualitative and quantitative relational vectors, identifying emotional tones such as sympathy, antagonism, antipathy, and indifference within transactional patterns.
- Explore the co-constructed relational space between partners by observing transactions, ego states, emotional intensity, and the patterns that emerge in the therapeutic encounter.
- Demonstrate therapeutic presence and attunement when working with couples, using contracting and meta-communication to foster mutual recognition and relational repair.

SPEAKER: Reena Goenka

Updating your Learning Scripts for Mental Health in Learning

Learning can affect mental health, particularly in Singapore. You will be introduced to the concepts of learning scripts and relational learning and take part in the Four Learning Stories exercise. In addition, you will have two complimentary individual supervision sessions with Jr-Earn, where you can process your discoveries and work to update your learning scripts for better mental health.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

- The concept of learning scripts and relational learning
- How your early learning experiences impact you in learning situations
- Begin updating your learning scripts for better mental health in learning

SPEAKER: Jr-Earn Karen Lam
