The TA Awakening: How Awareness Leads to Change

There comes a moment in life—sometimes sudden, sometimes gradual—when we realize that the way we’ve been living is not the only way. That the patterns we follow, the beliefs we hold, the relationships we cultivate are all shaped by deep, often unseen forces.

For me, this realization arrived when I encountered Transactional Analysis (TA). It wasn’t just another psychological framework—it was a wake-up call, a mirror, a pathway to change.

The Power of Awareness

Before TA, I moved through life responding automatically to circumstances, unaware that much of my thinking, emotional responses, and behaviors were shaped by embedded patterns I had never questioned. I knew moments of frustration, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion—but I didn’t always understand why.

Through TA, I learned that many of these reactions weren’t just mine; they belonged to the scripts I had unconsciously inherited.

✔ The need to always prove my worth—rooted in early experiences.

✔ The fear of slowing down—a belief shaped by societal expectations.

✔ The voice that told me I wasn’t capable of learning new things—a silent yet powerful narrative that held me back for years.

TA didn’t just teach me what was happening—it taught me why. And most importantly, it revealed that awareness is the first, most vital step to change.

Rewriting Old Narratives Through Counselling

Fifteen years ago, as a new counsellor, I had the privilege of working with youth-at-risk—young individuals who had been labeled by society, defined by statistics, and often seen as a “problem to fix.” But I saw something different.

I saw resilience. I saw potential. I saw hope.

TA taught me that labels are just scripts that society imposes—scripts that these youth had internalized, scripts that told them they were “troublemakers,” “failures,” “lost causes.” My role wasn’t just to counsel them—it was to show them that they had the power to rewrite their own stories.

I witnessed young minds awaken to possibilities beyond the confines of their past experiences. I watched them shift from “I’m not OK” to “I’m OK”. I became a catalyst for change, helping them understand that their worth was not determined by mistakes or circumstances—but by their ability to grow, choose, and create a new path.

The Most Powerful Change

Perhaps the most profound shift TA gave me was the ability to say, with full conviction: “I am OK.”

This wasn’t just about self-esteem—it was about liberation. I was no longer trapped by the belief that I had to earn my worth. I was no longer limited by fears that kept me from trying new things, exploring new spaces, or redefining my path.

And just as TA empowered me, I used it to empower others—especially the youth I guided.

Awareness wasn’t just enlightening—it was life-changing.

Moving Forward with Awareness

Today, as I step deeper into this season of wisdom and renewal, I use the lessons of TA not just for myself, but for those I guide as a counsellor and psychotherapist.

✔ I help clients uncover their own scripts, giving them the tools to step beyond limitations.

✔ I show them how awareness leads to transformation, just as it did for me.

✔ I continue my own journey—learning, growing, embracing—knowing that every day is an opportunity to live more fully, more consciously.

Awareness is the greatest gift TA has given me. And with awareness, change is no longer a distant hope—it is a lived reality.
